A massive LinkedIn leak reportedly exposed data of 700 million users

  2021-07-16 14:25:37
A massive LinkedIn leak reportedly exposed data of 700 million users, making it the second large data dump following a similar episode just months earlier.

Hackers have already posted a sample of the data, which included information for 1 million users, according to a report on RestorePrivacy.

The data appears to be recent, with samples from 2020 and 2021, according to the report. In a statement to Fortune, a LinkedIn spokesperson disputes this, saying, "We’ve investigated, and there is no evidence that this is new data or that the data is from 2020 and 2021."

The price for that enormous collection of data? $5,000.

Privacy Sharks examined the free sample and saw that the records include full names, gender, email addresses, phone numbers and industry information. It’s unclear what the origin of the data is – but the scraping of public profiles is a likely source. That was the engine behind the collection of 500 million LinkedIn records that went up for sale in April. It contained an “aggregation of data from a number of websites and companies” as well “publicly viewable member profile data,” LinkedIn said at the time.

LinkedIn said that it could not find any proof of infiltration of its servers during either of the two occurrences and remains confident that it was a data scraping campaign. However, the scraping of data is against the company’s policies and it claims it is taking steps to try to prevent this from happening in the future.

“We want to be clear that this is not a data breach and no private LinkedIn member data was exposed,” the company said in a statement on June 29. “Our initial investigation has found that this data was scraped from LinkedIn and other various websites and includes the same data reported earlier this year in our April 2021 scraping update.”

Data scraping is extracting information from a website. It’s usually used to compile valuable information from a website that companies do not want to be downloaded or reused.

“The leaked information poses a threat to affected LinkedIn users,” according to Privacy Sharks. “With details such as email addresses and phone numbers made available to buyers online, LinkedIn individuals could become the target of spam campaigns, or worse still, victims of identity theft.”

It added, “expert hackers may still be able to track down sensitive data through just an email address. LinkedIn users could also be on the receiving end of email or telephone scams that trick them into sharing sensitive credentials or transferring large amounts of money.”

Users should secure their LinkedIn accounts by updating passwords and enabling two-factor authentication.
